Competition Roundup

I have a few writing things on the go at the moment that I’ll share with you in due course, plus a full-time job that is more hectic than usual, but I thought I’d share details of some writing comps ending soon. So here goes … good luck to all those who enter!

This is a great opportunity for an unpublished aspiring chick lit author and all you need to do is enter the first 3000 words of your novel. As per their website, Novelicious has teamed up with Avon (HarperCollins) and Books and the City (Simon & Schuster UK) and are offering two main awards, ‘The People’s Choice Award,’ and ‘The Books and the City Award.’ For each of these there will be a winner and a runner-up. There are some fab prizes including critiques by top editors/editorial teams, mentoring from a bestselling author, book vouchers etc. The closing date is 3 April, so get your entries in quickly. Full details are at

The Bristol Short Story Prize  ends on 31 March so as with the Novelicious comp you need to hurry up! Entries cost £7 and can be in any genre or subject in any syle, up to a maximum of 3000 words. 20 stories will be shortlisted for the first prize and writers will be invited to an awards ceremony in Bristol on July 14th 2012 wher. At this cermeony the winners will be announced and BSSP Anthology Volume 5 will be launched. Prizes include cash prizes and waterstones gift cards.  All 20 stories on the shortlist will be included in the print and e-book versions of the anthology. Very exciting! Full details can be found at

Lastly, there’s the chance to see your novel  – any genre apart from children’s literature – in print if you are not yet published or represented by an agent. And the novel doesn’t even have to be finished! Closing date is 31 March. As per their website, Good Housekeeping has teamed up with Orion Books and super-agent Luigi Bonomi to offer this chance to a very lucky GH reader. I saw this comp in the GH magazine after someone mentioned it on an online writer’s forum, but the entry form is on the website. First prize is publication plus a £25K advance, pretty astounding in today’s market, where more and more authors’ advances are being squeezed. You need to send, in hard copy, a full synopsis (up to two pages), 5,000 words of the novel or a single chapter if it runs to more than 5,000 words (needs to be kept under 10,000) and a 100-word mini biography (easier said than done) plus a completed copy of the form. Full T&C’s are at

On another note I’d like to give a big shout out to some of my writerly friends on the Romantic Novelists Association New Writers Scheme who have formed their own group and blog – The Romaniacs. The blog is excellent and I thoroughly recommend it; and they’ve just won the versatile blogger award!

You can find them at

I am off to London this Saturday to attend an RNA meeting. I can’t wait to catch up with everyone and I’ll try and put up a post about it next week.

For now – happy writing.

Nikki 🙂
