I’m mega excited because today marks the release of the Truly, Madly, Deeply Romantic Novelists Association anthology published by Mills & Boon! And we’re even giving away copies… see below for your chance to win 🙂

I thought you might like to know what inspired my story – A Night to Remember – and how it got into print…

I wrote the original – and very short – version back in 2010 as an entry for the Elizabeth Goudge Trophy, an award given by the Romantic Novelists Association every year at the annual conference. All conference attendees can enter, whether published or unpublished and it’s judged anonymously. I had just rejoined the RNA after an 8 year absence and was keen to get stuck in, so I duly set about trying to come up with something…

At the time, a relative was ill and her memory of faces and names was affected and one day I was driving home thinking about her. And I wondered if despite the illness she still might be able to recognise the man she loved? In short, can love overcome anything? Even when the odds are against it?

I wrote the story and entered and it was judged anonymously by best selling author Katie Fforde, who called me while I was on my way back home from London to tell me I’d received an Honourable Mention. I remember crying with happiness – one of my favourite authors had called me. And said nice things about my story. And told me to keep writing!

Fast forward a few years and I had my story tucked away in a drawer while working on a few full length novels. When the call for submissions for the new RNA anthology went out I thought it was the perfect opportunity for A Night to Remember to make a reappearance. It is after all about love –  the theme of the anthology. So I rewrote it several times and more than doubled it in length and then rewrote it again and sent it off. Months later came the amazing news it had been long listed for publication, then some time later I heard it’d been short listed and then last summer I received the incredible email to say it had been selected for inclusion in both digital and print editions by the publishers. Then more good news came – ebook bundles of three or four stories were to be published… and guess who I would be bundled with? *Jumping up and down waving my hands in the air thrilled* yep, Katie Fforde, as well as best selling Mills and Boon author Heidi Rice!

So it just goes to show that no good story is ever wasted and you have to take opportunities where you can grab them 🙂
